Is this luxury wine company losing its bouquet?

One of the few wine companies listed on the stock exchange, The Duckhorn wallet (NYSE: NAPA) is just seven months away from its IPO in March. It served up a good vintage of revenue and earnings gains with its fourth quarter and fiscal 2021 report in early October, earning a stock market boost from satisfied investors. Its revenue of $ 70.89 million beat Wall Street expectations by 17.8%, while its adjusted earnings per share of $ 0.08 exceeded the average forecast by 300%.

Quarterly and full year results also strongly outperformed the previous year performance. Fiscal 2021 fourth quarter revenue increased 35.7% year-on-year, while adjusted net income of $ 9.2 million was 24.3% higher than the fourth quarter figure of fiscal year 2020. Detroit, female doctor, mom launches the opulence of a luxury wine label

Starting a wine or spirits label is no easy task, especially for a black woman with no previous experience or connections in the beverage industry. But Dr. LaToya Thompson tapped into his passion for science to launch Opulence.

Detroit woman launches luxury wine brand, seeks to shake up industry

DETROIT – A new wine on the store shelves is normally not a big deal, but this one is different.

Opulence Wine, the new Detroit wine brand launched on Thursday, bills itself as a luxury, but the journey that has brought it to this point makes it memorable.

An Opulence Wine Show was just a distant dream for sports physiotherapist, wife and mother of three, Dr. LaToya Thompson.

“I think I’m at a loss for words to finally see this,” Thompson said. “Sometimes it took a lot of no. Sometimes it wasn’t phone calls, I had to put my husband (Anthony) in the front to get his foot in the door.

“It was sometimes disheartening, I have to say. Sometimes I was like you know what, it’s just too hard. I don’t want to try anymore, ”said Thompson. “Why are we in 2021, even 2020, still grappling with racial disparities and things of that nature? Why they are so difficult for me … I have the wine, the wine is just sitting. I can’t sell it.

Thompson is proud to be a part of the moment and what is happening in Detroit and the Michigan wine industry.

“Detroit is pushing harder, we’re going to get there no matter what,” Thompson said.

She hopes her launch will inspire others with big dreams, including her daughter.

“Colleagues who come in today (Thursday) are like, ‘Well I’m bringing my daughter to see it can be done,’ she said.

In June 2020, the Michigan Wine Collaborative launched an Inclusion and Expansion Committee to represent and advocate for people historically excluded from the wine industry.

  • Dr LaToya Thompson will launch Opulence Wine, a luxury wine brand on October 7.

When Michigan-born Dr LaToya Thompson began learning about wine, it was to curb his own curiosity about how grapes got from vine to bottle. Wine was more than a relaxation after work, and learning more became a hobby, one that her husband noticed and suggested that she take up the business.

“My husband is the entrepreneur, he’s a businessman, and he said to me, ‘We spend a lot of money on wine, we have to make money out of it,’ says Thompson. “It was just like ‘let’s examine it’, and it all fell on our knees.”

From this conversation, Thompson, a sports medicine physiotherapist, began to take steps to turn his hobby into a business. She logged on to a Napa Valley winery, learned how to get the proper liquor license, and even hired her sister, who happens to be a lawyer, to help her out with legal matters.

Although Thompson has done much of the legwork herself and continues to be involved in all aspects of her business, she has enlisted the help of another local winemaker.

“I really didn’t have a lot of people leading me on the business side,” says Thompson. “Regina Gaines of House of Pure Vin has been quite important in supporting him and helping him on his own, in terms of who to talk to and the different avenues to follow.”

In 2017, Thompson began the journey to create Opulence Wine and after nearly five years the brand is about to launch with the release of two wines: a Cabernet Sauvignon that sells for around $ 52 and a Pinot Grigio that sells for around $ 52. sells for around $ 26.

When it came to naming his brand, Thompson wanted consumers to feel like they were having a truly luxurious experience. She says that in the African American community, luxury is sometimes something that most find it difficult to enjoy fully and comfortably.

“In African American culture, sometimes we tend to avoid luxury things or it’s a disconnect from what we should have and deserve; that we shouldn’t have these beautiful things because we’re black or colored, ”says Thompson. “I don’t think it’s necessarily always fair, even with the wine industry we’re growing as people of color in this industry, but it’s certainly not an easy feat.

Although Opulence Wine officially launches on October 7, Thompson is already thinking about the future of his wine brand. She plans to release a red blend later this year and hopes to release a sparkling wine in early 2022.

Opulence Wine will host its official brand launch and tasting experience at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 7 at House of Pure Wine, 1433 Woodward Ave., Detroit.
