Surrounded by Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Mourvèdre vineyards dating back over 60 years, Haselgrove Wines sits in an iconic location that is the perfect blend of history, beauty and, of course, good viticultural conditions.
Originally established in 1981, Haselgrove changed hands in 2008 when the current owners purchased the property and eventually revamped the brand presentation. And now the eminent McLaren Vale winery has established a whole new roof cellar door, making its award-winning wines available to the public for tasting.
The cellar door on the Haselgrove rooftop is nestled among the old vines that surround the property and is elevated to provide uninterrupted 360 degree views over McLaren Flat and beyond – all made possible with the support of a grant from the South Australian Tourism Commission’s Tourism Industry Development Fund (TIDF).
Visitors will be able to sample a wide range of Haselgrove offerings, including wines from their Legend, Origin, Alternative, First Cut and ‘H by’ Haselgrove series. Haselgrove Wine Roof cellar door also offers an excellent food menu including hand-stretched pizzas and gourmet pasture platters.
The facility also offers visitors the opportunity to blend their own varietals in a fun and even competitive format called One Minute Winemaker which will allow to distinguish the real amateur sommeliers from the GSM charlatans!
Its extensive range, which also includes a series of increasingly popular emerging Mediterranean varietals, has been widely promoted B2B in both domestic and overseas markets, but as Christophe Forel, CEO of Haselgrove Wines explains, the winery is not opening. only its doors to the end consumer, but sharing its award-winning range in the most immersive way possible.
“One Minute Winemaker is to give wine lovers the opportunity to tackle the art of wine blending and for those who like a bit of friendly competition and banter, to test their palate against others to determine the amateurs of wine among the contenders and ultimately, the best GSM blend of the day,” explained Mr. Forel.
The One Minute Winemaker allows visitors to experiment with blending 3 key McLaren Vale varieties, Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre – all from Haselgrove’s current range – to create their own ‘signature’ blend.
Under the expert guidance of Haselgrove staff, participants will experiment with percentage combinations of different wines until they produce their favorite blend, which can then be bottled, labeled and delivered to their homes.
“It’s amazing the difference a few percent of a particular grape variety can make to the overall sensory characteristics of a blend and so the process is very educational, interesting and fun and ideal for corporate team building or celebrations with family and friends,” added Mr. Forel.
